How to Register for a Tax Number?

1. Determine Where You Need to Register

Stripe Tax monitors your transactions and flags when you have a tax obligation in a specific jurisdiction—such as a country, state, or province. This obligation may arise from sales volume, economic nexus, physical presence (e.g. offices, employees, inventory), or destination-based rules Stripe Support+10docs.stripe.com+10docs.stripe.com+10YouTube+3docs.stripe.com+3Stripe+3.

2. Register with the Applicable Tax Authority

In the United States:

  • Go to the relevant state’s Department of Revenue website.
  • There, choose the option to register a new tax account (e.g. “New business tax account” in Indiana) and complete your business details, responsible party info, NAICS codes, date of first sale, and pay any required fees (e.g. ~$25). Stripe can also register on your behalf in supported states Stripe.

In Other Countries:

  • Follow local VAT or GST registration processes—for example, in the UK, Germany, Australia, etc.
  • Provide business details, industry classification, sales volume estimates, bank info, supporting documentation, and the effective start date for tax collection docs.stripe.com.

3. Enter Your Registration in Stripe Tax

Once you have a legal tax number (e.g. VAT number, EIN, GST, ABN), or you’re planning to register soon:

  1. Log into your Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Go to the Tax > Registrations tab.
  3. Click “+ Add registration”, select the country (and state/province if applicable), and enter:
    • The tax registration number.
    • The start date for when you begin collecting tax.
    • Any optional end date or future scheduling.
  4. Save the registration. Stripe will begin calculating and collecting tax for that jurisdiction automatically (or at the scheduled date) Stripe+12docs.stripe.com+12Stripe+12.

Stripe can also register on your behalf in important markets like the U.S., and outside the U.S. via Taxually, which automatically pre-fills your registration details and streamlines approvals Stripe+3docs.stripe.com+3docs.stripe.com+3.

4. Enable Tax Collection in Stripe

After setting up the registration:

5. Display Tax IDs on Invoices

If required by law, display your tax number(s) on invoices:

  • Add and manage tax IDs (VAT, GST, ABN, etc.) under Settings ▶ Billing ▶ Invoice Template ▶ Manage tax information in your Stripe Dashboard.
  • Set a default tax ID and optionally include multiple IDs (up to 10) on individual invoices using the Invoice editor or API Stripe Supportdocs.stripe.com+1.

6. Filing and Compliance

  • If you’re subscribed to Stripe’s Tax Complete plan, Stripe (via partner Taxually or direct) can prepare and submit tax returns for you, handling filing deadlines and remittance.
  • Otherwise, Stripe Tax still gives you tax transaction data exports so you (or your accountant) can file manually as needed in each jurisdiction docs.stripe.comStripe.
