To configure the basic settings of Stripe Tax for your store, follow these steps:
1. **Enable Stripe Tax**
Log in to your Stripe Dashboard. In the left-hand menu, select “Tax.” If you haven’t enabled Stripe Tax yet, you’ll see an option to get started. Click “Get started” and follow the prompts to activate Stripe Tax for your account.
2. **Set Your Business Location**
Stripe Tax needs to know your business’s primary location to determine your tax obligations. In the Tax settings, enter your business address and confirm your country and region. This information helps Stripe calculate where you may need to collect taxes.
3. **Add Product Tax Categories**
Stripe Tax uses product tax categories to determine the correct tax rates. Go to the “Products” section in your Stripe Dashboard. For each product or service you sell, assign the appropriate tax category (e.g., physical goods, digital products, services). This ensures Stripe applies the correct tax rules for each item.
4. **Configure Customer Location Collection**
Stripe Tax calculates taxes based on your customer’s location. Make sure your checkout process collects accurate customer addresses, including country, state, and postal code. Stripe Checkout and Payment Links automatically collect this information, but if you use a custom integration, ensure you’re passing the required address fields to Stripe.
5. **Set Up Automatic Tax Calculation**
In the Tax settings, enable “Automatic tax calculation.” This allows Stripe to automatically calculate and apply the correct tax rates to each transaction based on your business and customer locations, as well as the product tax category.
6. **Review Tax Registration and Collection Settings**
Stripe Tax can help you track where you may need to register to collect taxes. In the Tax settings, review the “Registrations” section. Add any regions where you are registered to collect tax. Stripe will only collect taxes in these regions unless you enable “Automatic registration suggestions,” which notifies you when you may need to register in new locations.
7. **Customize Tax Display and Invoicing**
Decide how taxes are displayed to your customers at checkout (included in price or added at checkout). Adjust these settings in the Tax section under “Display preferences.” If you use Stripe Invoicing, ensure tax settings are enabled for invoices as well.
8. **Test Your Setup**
Use Stripe’s test mode to simulate transactions and verify that taxes are being calculated and applied correctly. Check receipts and invoices to ensure tax amounts and breakdowns are accurate.
By following these steps, you’ll have the basic Stripe Tax settings configured for your store, ensuring compliance and accurate tax collection on your sales.
